Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD): Advanced Flaw Sizing and Detection

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) is an advanced ultrasonic inspection method that provides an
exceptional level of accuracy for defect detection and sizing. Unlike conventional ultrasonic testing, which relies on reflected waves, TOFD uses diffracted longitudinal waves to provide precise data. Our technique involves placing two ultrasonic sensors on either side of a weld. One sensor acts as a transmitter, while the other receives both reflected and diffracted sound waves
from any anomalies or geometric reflectors within the material.

The TOFD Advantage for Your Projects

TOFD's unique methodology offers significant advantages, making it a powerful tool for critical applications:

  • Unmatched Accuracy: By measuring the time of flight of the diffracted signals, we can accurately measure the through-wall height and length of flaws, even if they are not optimally oriented to the sound beam. This provides a level of precision that is essential for Fitness-for Service (FFS) assessments.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Using ultrasonic beam spread, TOFD provides a wide area of coverage, ensuring that a single scan can effectively screen a large volume of material.
  • Real-Time Data Visualization: During a typical TOFD inspection, our equipment collects A scans and compiles them into a detailed B-scan (side view) image of the weld. This clear visual representation simplifies post-acquisition analysis and reporting.

By leveraging our expertise in TOFD, we provide you with a solution that delivers reliable, accurate data, empowering you to make informed decisions and ensure the long-term integrity of your assets.
